Choosing the right material matters more than any other decision in a 3D print — it decides whether your part survives the Sri Lankan sun, snaps under load, or captures fine detail. Here's how we pick, in plain English, for every job that comes through our Colombo studio.

Need it strong and functional? PETG or ABS.
Need fine detail (figurines, miniatures)? Resin.
Just need it cheap and rigid for indoors? PLA.
Need it flexible? TPU.
Living outdoors in the sun? ASA.

PLA — the easy all-rounder

PLA is the default for most prints: rigid, dimensionally accurate, available in every colour, and the cheapest to print. It's perfect for prototypes, models, décor and anything that lives indoors.

Its one weakness: it softens around 60 °C. Leave a PLA part on a car dashboard in Colombo traffic and it will droop. For anything hot or outdoors, skip to PETG or ASA.

PETG — our go-to for functional parts

PETG is tougher than PLA, slightly flexible so it resists snapping, and handles moisture and moderate heat well. It's our default for brackets, enclosures, outdoor fittings and parts that take everyday knocks. A great balance of strength and printability.

ABS — the heat-resistant classic

ABS is the engineering plastic behind LEGO bricks — heat-resistant, tough and machinable. It's ideal for automotive-adjacent parts and anything near an engine or in direct heat. It needs careful printing to avoid warping, which is exactly why using a professional service beats a desktop printer for ABS jobs.

TPU — flexible and rubber-like

TPU prints flexible, rubbery parts: phone cases, gaskets, grips, wheels and vibration dampers. If you need a part to bend, squish or grip, TPU is the answer.

ASA — built for the outdoors

ASA is like ABS but UV-stable, so it won't fade, yellow or turn brittle in sunlight. For Sri Lanka's strong sun, ASA is the right choice for any part that lives permanently outdoors — signage, mounts, outdoor fittings.

Resin (SLA) — when detail is everything

Resin cures liquid photopolymer with UV light at layer heights around 0.05 mm — around four times finer than FDM. Surfaces come out smooth, capturing faces, textures and tiny features. It's the only real choice for figurines, miniatures, jewellery patterns and display models.

The trade-off: standard resin is more brittle than FDM plastics, so we steer functional, load-bearing parts to FDM and keep resin for detail and display. Read more on our resin printing page.
